Anna Schertle
March 20, 1901-September 30, 1991
Anna H. Klaus was born in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the identical twin sister of Marguerite Klaus. Anna, Marguerite, and their three siblings were the children of immigrant parents from Germany.
When she was 15, in 1915, Anna began working at The Dutch Tea Room in Baltimore as a waitress, along with Marguerite. Anna made and served various flavors of ice cream in the kitchen, including strawberry, banana, and raspberry. Years later, she and Marguerite worked at the Woman’s Industrial Exchange together throughout their 90s, with Marguerite starting work there in 1947. Anna and Marguerite were both waitresses.
The sisters lived next door to each other in Hamilton, Baltimore, and even married brothers. Anna married the older brother, Charles Schertle, and they had two sons, Charles G. III and Joseph H., and a daughter, Marie M. Schertle. Anna passed away on September 30, 1991, in Baltimore, Maryland.
